Josh Lang went to London with investigative journalism on his mind, but he carved out a reputation as a fixer instead and mastered the art of spinning any client out of a crisis. Now he’s back in Australia, with the offer of a job that’s supposed to be good news. The client is a law firm, the talent is Ben Harkin and the story is the bravery decoration Ben is about to be awarded for his courage in a siege. But Josh’s messy past with Ben was a big part of his move to London in the first place, and the closer he gets to Ben’s story the more the cracks start to show. Throw in a mini-golf tour of the Gold Coast and a law-student who’s a stripper by night, and Josh’s pursuit of the truth becomes way more complicated than he’d bargained for. The Fix shows what can happen when a reluctant bender of truth meets a web of lies and his unfinished past and a girl, and all at the same time – with hilarious consequences and revelations that keep coming, right up to the very last page.

First, huge caveat: for the past two or three years, I've been working with Nick, through a company I founded called Exciting Press, to publish his work digitally, pretty much everywhere in the world besides his native Australia and New Zealand territories. That said, I didn't publish this one, though I did read it. I snapped it up almost as soon as it was published.I've been a fan of Nick's for more than a decade, beginning when I read Perfect Skin when it was first published. What I love about Nick's work as a reader is what simultaneously frustrates me about his work as his publisher and marketer; his books rarely fit easily into any category or genre. They're all imbued with Nick's signature humor and warmth, but he rarely tackles any genre head on. There's generally some romance between some characters, but it's not rom-com romance. His characters usually don't look for happily ever afters so much as this-might-not-be-perfect-but-there's-happiness-to-be-found-here.
It's real and true, in other words, and it's the same here. This is somewhat of a departure for Nick. Josh Lang is a blogger trying to be either a journalist or a PR guy, though he's pretty much stumbling through all those things. His latest assignment brings him into contact with an old college buddy who's now a lawyer and about to receive a medal for an act of heroism; it's Josh's job to make sure the story gets out and well told.
I'm not going to spoil anything about that particular story, but I'll tell you I thought this one was. I laughed aloud in several places. The characters, as usual, felt like real people. The story felt like the real world.

The Fix Nick Earls 9781495996979 Books Reviews
The story had little value. TKL
The Fix is way more book, with twists and turns and more complex plot than other Nick Earls novels. It has lots of really funny moments and the characters are people you might know or have met sometime in your life, whose lives have become way more interesting and fun than you imagine they would have expected. I enjoyed every page.
First off I have to confess I am a bit of a fan of this Brisbane writer's books & have liked most of his.
The Fix is a little understated & laid back but this is part of the charm of
Nick Earls writing style I think. It doesn't have the laugh out loud bits I have come to
look for & enjoy but then it's not that kind of story. Overall, it still
has his stamp...... I enjoyed it & remain impatient as ever for his next.
An unusual but compelling story told well
Don't believe the five or four star reviews, the fix might aptly be named in their behalf. This is an extremely painfully slow read and it's going nowhere. Dull, boring, self-centered, not funny, attempted and failed wit, a waste of time. Thought about including an excerpt but if done the reader wouldn't even finish the review. Yes, this book is that bad, at least the beginning thirteen percent. Refuse to read the remainder.
All right and excerpt; "I had a post-it note on my laptop to remind me to do neck and back exercises frequently. I had been taught them by a physio in London when I had seized up after some long working hours. He told me I risked ending up with the posture of a medieval monk who had spent his entire life illumination manuscripts." etc etc. There are four more sentences on this topic. And as you can see there are four I's in three sentences. This book is about I and I is not as glib or funny as he thinks.
One of Nick Earls' best books, full of wit, warmth, angst and love. Our hero (and he does do some pretty heroic stuff towards the end of the book) Josh, is kicking around Brisbane sort of working and blogging. He meets a great girl, Hayley, in unusual circumstances but they make it work. He picks up a job being the PR manager for a former friend who is a bit of a hero himself. Wrap it up with the sort of introspection and worrying that Nick Earls writes about and it is a good story to read. The settings are enjoyable and the ending pretty rewarding.
I've been a long time fan of Nick Earls; Zigzag Street was the first book to ever make me actually laugh out loud, but I felt maybe he was losing his touch with Butterfish...I wanted so badly to like it but just couldn't relate to Curtis. Happily in The Fix, Earls makes a welcome return to the low-key self-deprecating yet immensely likeable character that he does better than almost anyone else. (With the exception of perhaps Jonathan Tropper...
Josh Lang is a professional 'fixer' (public relations specialist) who is hired to manage the PR for lawyer Ben, who is about to be awarded one of the highest civilian honor awards in Australia; the Star of Courage, for his bravery in a siege at his work. Josh is also messy, disorganized, slightly gauche but also clever, clearly talented and an really engaging character. Two pages in and you already feel you know, relate to and like this unassuming guy.
At first straightforward, the story quickly develops into a complex yet compelling situation with the revelation of Josh's previous relationship with Ben (involving a mutual girlfriend) and Josh's developing suspicion about the validity of Ben's story. Nick Earls adds a love interest, a couple of 'villains' and a number of engaging and entertaining supporting characters to balance his protagonist and result is a fascinating mystery with a light comedic thread throughout.
This story is a genuine page turner. Nick has mastered the art of the timely reveal with just enough questions and answers threaded through the story to keep you guessing and maintain satisfaction with the outcomes. It's a clever writer who can execute this and few do it as well as this author.
Bravo Nick!
